Installing software
Q: How do I install these programs?
A: Windows programs distributed as EXE files are self-installing. ZIP files, however, are compressed archives and require a program such as Power Archiver, WinZip or PK Zip to extract the files inside.
Q: When I run your program(s) nothing happens. What's going on?
A: You are probably trying to run a command line Windows program. "Command line" or "console" programs
do not have graphical interfaces; they output plain text. You have to run such programs from the Command Prompt. To get to the command
prompt, use Start/Run and open "command" on Windows 9x systems or "cmd" on Windows NT systems. You must then type the program name and
any parameters at the C:\> prompt, for example: berkfind *.txt /p
Q: What are MD5 and PGP signatures? How do I verify them?
A: This is entirely optional. The signatures are an extra security measure that
let you verify the integrity and authenticity of downloaded files. The MD5 signature of the file
you download can be computed with our freeware utility,
and should be compared to the expected value to verify integrity. To guarantee that software originated
from PC-Tools.Net, some packages have been signed with the author's key -
creating a detached signature. The PGP signatures can be verified using PGP or GPG. Two useful
front-end for GPG are WinPT and GPGshell.
To verify from the command-line, use: gpg --verify sigfilename orgfilename
Adding / submitting software
Q: How do I add my own software to your site?
A: You can not add your own software to the main site. However, we have a links section dedicated to Free PC Software. You can add a link to your web site on the OpenLinx page, by filling out this brief form. One link per company, please.
Purchasing software
Q: Why should I pay for trialware?
A: You will get a better (more functional) version, technical support, free upgrades, and most importantly support future development of both high quality freeware and trialware. Software development takes considerable time and effort, and I can not afford to continue to develop this software without your support!
Q: Is it safe to order software online?
A: Yes, ordering software online is safe. Your personal data is encrypted while being transmitted over the Internet, which means that nobody except the recipient can read it. Our online orders are handled by ShareIt, a well-established company that specializes in international online software orders. If you have any concerns, please see ShareIt's FAQ (ShareIt handles the orders).
Q: What is your privacy policy?
Here is our privacy policy. Also see ShareIt (element 5)'s privacy policy.
